Will the Slovene Anže Kopitar Play at the Winter Olympics 2018?
Until 15 January 2017, it will be known whether the best in the history Slovenian hockey player Anže Kopitar and other stars of the North American Hockey League (the NHL) will participate in the Olympic hockey tournament at the Winter Games 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Christophe Dubi, the executive director of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recently stated this idea. “This is the deadline for the arrangement of all details,” Dubi said.
In October, the NHL commissioner Bill Daly announced in Toronto that the NHL had “pessimistic” concerns regarding the performance of hockey players in the Olympic tournament 2018 because of the unsuccessful negotiations between the IOC, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the NHL concerning the coverage for travel expenses, accommodation and insurance of players. In particular, the IOC refused to fund the costs for the NHL stars.
However, Christophe Dubi has more optimistic views on this situation. He assures that the negotiations will break the deadlock given that the NHL officials conducted an official visit to Pyeongchang in October.
