Women’s National Basketball Team of Slovenia (U-20) Becomes the Vice-Champion of Europe
The women’s national basketball team of Slovenia (U-20) won silver medals at the European Championships in Matosinhos, Portugal. Slovenia lost to Spain with the score of 63:73 in the final match. The Russian national team won bronze after defeating France with 80:59.
The trainees of Damir Grgić had a successful first half of the final match, losing just one point to the titled Spaniards before the big break – 37:36. However, in the third quarter of the meeting, Spain was able to firmly seize the initiative, leading successful defensive and effective attacking strategies. Nevertheless, in the final stage of the game, everything fell into place. Angela Salvadores became the main scorer in the Spanish team. She has 19 points. Annamaria Prezelj from the Slovenian national team scored 17 points.
For the Slovenian women’s basketball, this is a truly historic achievement, because previously none of the women’s teams won medals of the European championship.
Ana Jakovina, Alma Potočnik, Aleksandra Krošelj, Maruša Seničar, Althea Gwashavanhu, Annamaria Prezelj, Eva Stefanoski, Tea Ramšak, Zala Friškovec, Larisa Ocvirk, Maša Verčič and Tina Cvijanovič represented Slovenia at the European Championships.
